Notes on how to do your creative work and create the life you want.

Yes, Please!

PA tasks

Thank you so much for applying for to be my personal assistant. There were SO many applications, and I really liked yours. You’re one of a few people who made the short list!!

I’m a big believer in making sure from the outset that we’re a great fit, so I’ve put together a process to make sure we work together well on all levels. Here are the next steps:

1)    Please complete the three sample projects below. I’ve learned from experience that the best way to learn how well someone will do is to see them in action, so I’ve put together a few tasks like those you’d be doing for me.  If you could complete these tasks by Mon 6/25 at 12 noon ET, that would be great. Sooner is even better! (If you are not able to do this, let me know when you can have the tasks done.)

2) Also include two professional references and their contact info (phone/email).

3) If, based on these projects, we’re moving forward with your application, I’ll ask you to take two assessments (Strengthsfinder and Kolbe) and email the results to me. I will, of course, reimburse you for the cost of these assessments.

4)   If we are moving forward with your application, I’ll also arrange an interview so we can get to know each other and talk more about what your responsibilities would be and what we each hope to get from working together.

I know this process is a commitment–and I totally appreciate your taking the time and making the effort to move through this process. I’m looking for someone who can really grow with me and my company over a long period of time, so I’m taking the effort to make sure it’s a great fit for both of us. I hope you feel the same way!!

Looking forward to getting to know you…

Warmly,

Emmeline

Sample tasks:

  1. Find a good handyperson who can hang doors (ie, a door has fallen off its hinges and needs to be put back on; the door has been rehung in the past but has fallen off again, so the screws may be stripped; I need someone who can do this right) and who will work in Ditmas Park, Brooklyn. Present two options + plus your top recommendation (and why)
  2. Client care: A client at an event (“Jenny”) is frustrated because of an emotional block and physically uncomfortable (it’s too hot). Describe what you would do and attach a short audio clip of what you would say to “Jenny”.
  3. Find an event space for a two-day retreat
  • Event will be a Thursday and Friday, 9 am-5 pm
  • 15-25 people
  • The retreat will include sitting in a circle on the floor, journaling, meditations, and improvisational movement/dancing (to music). It’s ideal if we can burn incense and candles.
  • The space should be in lower Manhattan or in Brooklyn and handicapped accessible
  • Lower price/hour is best, but a good atmosphere is important

Present two options + your top recommendation (and why)
